Post Operative Instructions For Extractions
1) Please keep a steady biting pressure on your extraction
sight with the gauze provided, changing them frequently.
2) Do not spit, rinse or drink through a straw for at least
24 hours.
3) If you are a smoker, please do not smoke for 24 to 48
hours. Smoking can cause you to dislodge your blood clot causing
a dry-socket. A dry-socket is extremely painful and should
be avoided if at all possible.
4) You may use an ice pack. Placing it against the affected
are for 10 minutes, then removing it for 10 minutes. Repeating
as desired. An ice pack will feel comforting and will help
reduce swelling.
5) You may rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours. This
will help in the healing process. You will want to do this
twice a day for two-to-three days.
6) You will also want to keep your head elevated once you
have arrived home.
7) It is best to go home and rest after an extraction. Do
not do any cardiovascular exercise or strenuous activities.
8) If Dr. Orwick has prescribed a pain medication, follow
the directions carefully and do not operate any heavy equipment
or motorized vehicles.
9) As with any extraction, you may experience bruising and
or swelling. An ice pack is recommended.
10) If you have persistent and increasing pain, you should
call our office.
11) Also, we know that having an extraction, although necessary
at times, is probably not the highlight of your day. Please
know that we are here for you if you have questions or concerns,
so feel free to call us at any time.
